E is for England

For part two of my double dose, I am going into my first adventure destination. Growing up, sports were a huge part of my life, they still are. While I played many, the one that I stuck with and got me to college, was soccer. To say I am a big fan of the game would be an understatement. To visit the rumored birthplace of soccer would be nothing short of amazing. I know many people that have been to England and they have loved it. There would be so much I would want to do and see. However, there would never be enough time to see everything. To help with that, I decided to pick the top 5 things I would want to see in England. As with the beaches, we will start with number 5.

5) Tower of London - A dark reminder of a part of the past. But I would find it fascinating. I would love to just look at all the instruments of terror. Of course I'm only fascinated from the outside. I would not be nearly as curious if I were sent there as a prisoner back in the Dark Ages.

4) Stonehedge - These mysterious monoliths have captured my attention for as long as I remember. I would love to find out how they got to where they are. I know there are many conspiracy theories out there. I like to keep an open mind with anything because if we have learned anything throughout history, it is that we are never 100% right. Am I right?

3) Abbey Road - I love music. All types. Old and new. So of course I would have to see where the Beatles came from. I would even be that annoying tourist that took his picture crossing the road.

2) The Oxford-Cambridge Rowing Race - As I mentioned, I have participated in many different sports. Rowing was one of them. Not only was being on the water fun, but the workout rowing offers is second to none. Seeing these world class athletes is amazing. Throw in a good old-fashioned rivalry, makes for a fun time. Both teams get plenty of warnings each year during the race because each is jockeying for the best position in the river. Plus this happens in March which would mean one thing...

1) Manchester United Football Match - I will clarify as in "soccer" football not American football. As mentioned  soccer by far my favorite sport. Manchester United is not only one of the biggest clubs in the world, but also my favorite team as well. When I make it to England, I will see a match. The season runs from August to early May so I would sadly miss the nicer summer weather but that wouldn't deter me. I would gladly stand whatever weather to watch a match.

Now while these are my top 5 things I would want to do, these are by no means the only things. I would go as many places and see as many things as my time would allow.

Old Traffod - Home Stadium for Manchester United

Been to England? Share some of your favorite places. Haven't been? What are some things you would do if you had to pick only one of two. Share them in the comments below.

  2. Stonehenge is amazing, but def combine it with a tour of Bath or another city...theres not much else out there and it takes a while to get too! you don't want to waste a day of your travels! Also, no trip to england is complete without tea, riding a double decker bus through Oxford Circle, and then trying to make the guards flinch at Buckingham Palace.

    1. Good to know about Stonehedge. Thank you. Of course I would want to do those things as well. Though I don't know how I'd get the gards to flinch. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. One of my biggest regrets is not visiting my brother when he was stationed in England in the Air Force. You just reminded me of this! Great post though!

    1. Thank you. Try not to regret it too much. While it would've been easier, there is no reason you can't go sometime in the future.

  4. I went to Tower of London; I wasn't fascinated. It just has lots and lots of memorabilia and stuff from all the monarch England has ever had. If you're into war and military things, you'll like it.
But it's also possible that I went here just after Westminster Abbey and my mind was still reeling from the effects of its glory!

  5. Great post. I first visited England on a working holiday visa in 2000...and I never left! It became my home, I became a UK citizen and the rest is history! So I read this post with interest and agree with all your suggestions. Particular Abbey Road, as I live a few streets away and often walk past it!

    1. That would be my worry. I hear many great things about it. Also the lure of world class soccer might be too much to ignore. I'm really glad you liked the post. Especially being someone that lives in England.

  7. I was a bit let down with stonehenge because it's so touristy- you pay to drive in, you pay to go into the walkway place and you can't go that near or touch them or anything. It would be cool to go by yourself and meditate to appreciate, but not with a hundred other tourists- then they're just rocks. I am English, so maybe my own country fails to interest me somewhat.
