A New Low

As I was sitting and writing last night, I had the TV on for background noise. I have this ability to listen even if I'm not exactly paying attention. My guess is that it is from my sports background and listening to my teammates while paying attention to whats going on was important. But I digress. A commercial came on that caught my attention. The commercial was for "Viggle".

In a sentence, Viggle is a rewards program for people watching TV. You get points for each program you watch. Basically they are encouraging people to sit around and watch more TV. Now correct me if I'm wrong but aren't we here in America suffering from an already overweight population? Now people will get rewards for sitting around for hours at a time staring at the screen? Where is the logic in that?

I realize that this is slightly hypocritical as even I do enjoy some TV programs. But I'll watch maybe an hour max unless it is a sporting event such as the super bow. I think this will hurt the younger people of our generation the most. Of course one could argue "Well I'll just tell my kids to go outside". While this will work to an extent, the truth is that it will always be monkey see, monkey do with kids. It is why infants react and mirror movements before speech.

I apologize for the rant. I will do my best to keep these few and far between but that just totally caught me off guard.  I love the outdoors. Getting away from everything, it is one of my favorite feelings in the world. I do realize everyone is different. That is fine. But let the kids of this current generation have a chance to see what they are missing, a chance to go on their own adventures. Don't entice them to sit around and watch TV. What have we got to lose right?

  1. My kids rarely if ever watched tv, or played video games! They played outside just like their father and I did when we were younger. Sports was such a big part of their lives.

When they went to college they got their first cell phones. Drives me nuts that my grand-kids are always on some electronic device or another.

I spent my first 22 years on the beach :)
Heck my first dog was named after a surf board Bahne.

    1. My 5 year old niece got an iPad for Christmas.. much to my brother's dismay (my brother and the mom are separated). But he only allows her to play with it for 30 mins in the evening. It's going to be the same way when I have kids.

And living on the beach is amazing. I couldn't imagine anything better. I know that it'll be hard if I ever have to live anywhere away from the beach.
